Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal
In 2020, the MAC presented Love Is the Message, the Message Is Death (2016), a gripping artistic event from artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa. The artwork is a bursting montage of images from a variety of sources, born from the observation of the spread of images of abuse of black people on YouTube. Both a celebration of the creativity and excellence of black culture and a depiction of state violence, this immersive projection presents powerful and overwhelming manifestations of restraint and bodily liberation. The visuals developed play with positive and negative spaces, an interpretation of the beauty and madness of the subjects addressed in the work of art. The bold typography is also a reminder of the act of protest, as the typeface design was inspired by the signs that can be seen in protests.
